Friday's 5 Quirky Questions with Emma Hillman

Author Interviews , 5 Quirky Questions No Comments »

1. What was the first concert you attended (without your parents) and do you still listen to
the band/artist today?

The first concert I attended without my parents (but with my best friend) was some type
of dance party in the middle of France’s biggest arena. You could see dozens of artists
and DJs in one single night and it used to be very popular. I went to that one specifically
to see one band: Take That. If you’re American, you might not have heard of them and
I apologize! I had a huge crush on Robbie Williams when I was a teenager. The crush
is still there, even though I’m married and he’s got a fiancée. I guess those things never
fade! I even named our cat Robbie (hey, it was the year of the R and it was the first name I
thought of!).
Anyhow, back to that concert, they only sang one song and it was frighteningly short, but I
remember very well the moment our eyes met. Robbie and I. It was fate. Or so my 14 year
old mind believed. It was a magical second!

2. What was the most recent show you watched on television?

On E4 (a British channel), they show reruns of Friends every evening, two or three
episodes in a row. I’ve therefore watched it all over again, from the first episode to the
last I’d never seen before. Some I remembered very well, some not at all. But it’s by re-
watching them that I really got it. That was a very good show! The dialogue, for one, is
amazing. I love looking at their clothes and crinkling my nose, asking myself ‘Did we really
wear these?!’ I read in a magazine that the channel has decided to stop the reruns from
September and that makes me sad. What a great way it was to go to bed after watching
Friends, a show that had no other goal but to make you smile?

3. Take out, What's for dinner?

Very good question! I think my daughter will want gnocchi. They’re cheese ones and I
make them with a cream sauce and shaved ham. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Enjoy!

4. Guilty movie pleasure, what is the one you re-watch?

When I’m sick and I have to stay home, I tend to re-watch Mr & Mrs. It’s not because it
has both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It isn’t even because they apparently fell in love
during the making of the movie. It’s just because well, I love it. I saw it the first time with
my husband when it was released. It was the last movie I saw in a long, long while as I
was pregnant with my daughter at the time (and newborns don’t let you go to the movies
often. As in never!). I remember going to the restaurant afterwards and talking about the
movie, giggling about the funny scenes (did you ever know Brad Pitt could be that funny?
). It holds some dear memories and whenever I watch it, it brings me back to that happy
place. Hence the perfect movie for when you’re ill!

5.  Favorite Hero in a book other then your own?

I love Ranger. I want more Ranger. I yearn for more Ranger scenes. Don’t know who
I’m talking about? Are you kidding me? (Go read the Stephanie Plum series by Janet
Evanovich). He’s the epitome cool guy. He’s sneaky and hot and he can make the heroine
burn with a single touch of his finger. He’s got his shortcomings, true, but I still love him.

Interview with Erin Nicholas

Author Interviews 2 Comments »

Hello Erin,

Hi, Terry!

I want to welcome you to Savvy and you signed on so I hope you are ready to dish the good stuff.  Because our readers want to know.  I was checking out your new release from Samhain, which looks fabulous by the way, when I noticed your cover.  Is it representative of the story?  There are a few items there that could be seen in a naughty light.

Erin:  It IS representative of the book!  Literally and figuratively!

TK:  Do you play pool?

Erin:  I do, but I'm not very good.  Or any good.  At all.  I still find it fun!  That makes no sense, but it's true.

TK:   So I was thinking about quirky questions and I thought of a few for you.  If you wanted to really embarrass  your hero what would you have done to him?

Erin:  Oh, boy.  Ben's hard to embarrass.  When you meet his friends, you'll see why!  I think he might be a little embarrassed by how tender and mushy he feels toward Jessica at times.  He wants to just take care of her, help
her relax, help her have a good time and watching her try to be tough all the time brings out a protectiveness in him that his friends would find amusing.  But I think he loves being in love once he figures it out.

TK:   What is the worst situation you have ever put one of your characters in?

Erin:  Both Ben and Jessica have lost their parents by the time we meet them in Just Right.  Jessica's dad died taking a bullet for her.  He never regained consciousness so she could tell him all the things she wanted to

say.  That was tough to put her through.  I really like this girl!  But they both have some tough spots to get through in this book.  (Imagine how I treat people I don't care about!).

TK:   Where were you the last time a moment of writing inspiration struck and you were without anything to record it with?

Erin:  It's been a long time since I was caught without something to write with and on.  I was waiting for my daughter's basketball practice to finish and they were running late.  I had been brainstorming prior and everything was still rushing through my mind.  I ended up writing an entire scene on the back of the deposit slips in my checkbook!  Short hand, of course :)

TK:  Give me everyone's favorite movie, yours, the heroine's, and hero's?

Erin:

Mine:  P.S. I Love You, While You Were Sleeping, A Lot Like Love--- anything mushy with a hot guy and a happy ending (and I write romance... hmmm, go figure!)

Heroine's:  Jessica wants to be a good girl, but there's always this temptation to be bad.  She likes tough girls who know what they want and can go get it.  Like Laura Croft.  She likes TV more... the tough girl cops who get to bend the rules--like Grace in Saving Grace.

Hero's:  Ben is a guy's guy.  He likes action movies, guns, car chases, the whole bit.  He doesn't do movies a lot though.  He spent time growing up and since med school in Africa doing missionary work so he isn't used
to things we take for granted like movies.

TK:  If you were in a boat and came across 3 movie stars in the water who would you find?

Erin:  Okay, anyone?  George Clooney, Matthew McConaughy and Gerard Butler.  Can you say deserted island? ;)

TK:  Now you can only save two of them, which hunk is shark food?

Erin:   Oh, Clooney for sure.  He's already had a darned good life! :)

Read About Erin  and her new Book Below

Jessica Bradford is affectionately known as the Little General in the emergency department at St. Anthony’s hospital.  She’s the best ER nurse they have and runs things with a perfection some envy, but it wasn’t always that way.  There was a time when “rebellious” was her middle name.  But when her father took a bullet for her, leaving her the sole guardian of her two younger siblings, Jessica decided to go straight.  She’s been successfully resisting temptation ever since.

Until Dr. Ben Torres comes along.   She’s drawn to the trauma surgeon who literally puts people’s lives back together.  He’s everything she’s convinced she wants: responsible, dedicated, selfless.  The tall, dark and handsome bit is just icing on the cake.

Ben’s kept his distance, knowing they couldn’t mix business with pleasure.  Until he finally decides he’s done playing the good guy. What’s being a trauma surgeon ever gotten him but late hours, patients who don’t remember his name and a whole lot of frustration? His sudden suspension ensures that work is no longer an issue.  Now he can teach Jessica all the things good girls should never know.

Little does Ben know, Jessica could teach him more than a thing or two about being bad.  Jessica can’t believe Ben is acting more like a kid in a candy store than a man who’s about to throw his career away. When she’s manipulated into babysitting him, she does her best to keep him out of trouble—except trouble is all Ben’s interested in. And suddenly Jessica’s having trouble remembering why that’s a bad thing…

Warning: Contains hot love in a store dressing room and in the front seat of a car—at the expense of a very nice strawberry patch, unfortunately—oh, and hooker boots. Can’t forget the hooker boots.

Interview with Juniper Bell

Author Interviews No Comments »

I would like to welcome Author Juniper Bell to Savvy and the Backseat.  Her most recent release from Samhain Publishing is Training the Receptionist.  So Ms. Bell, have you ever been a receptionist yourself?

First of all, thanks for having me on Savvy Readers! As a matter, of fact, I was a receptionist for a very short time. The job was receptionist/PSA writer at a TV station, years ago. Definitely nothing like the job my heroine Dana has! But I've had lots of other office jobs, so that environment is very familiar to me. The phones, the bland decor, the tedium. Well, Dana's job isn't tedious, but mine were.

What is it about naughty office romance - seems to be ladies secret or not so secret fantasy?

Naughty office romance ... well, it's like anything else we know is wrong, we know it's going to be trouble, so that makes it all the more tempting. The appeal of the forbidden, or at least the strongly discouraged. That's what I love about fantasies, writing them, reading them -- you don't have to cross the lines in real life, but you can imagine what it would be like if you did. And these days, we spend so much time at work, it's natural that our thoughts might stray in some naughty directions. And sometimes our actions too, of course! There's plenty of real-life office romances. I don't know if there are any quite like Dana, Simon's and Ethan's. LOL.

So are you planning to take us back into the office anytime soon?

Well, since I've already gotten a reader request for a sequel, I probably will continue Dana and company's story. I've got other projects lined up first, but I will definitely be paying another visit to the firm of Cowell & Dirk.   So I can't say when, exactly, but it will happen. Heck, I'm anxious to see what happens next in the story!

So a little office romance... where would your personal fantasy play out?   Desk?   Hallway?    Filing Cabinet?

Filing cabinet! Hmm, never tried that. ;) I can't reveal personal information here, but really, who wouldn't want to sweep all the papers off the desk and just go for it?

True - tv and movies seem to ignore that eventually you have to clean up the mess - clearing desks, rolling in mud, looks good, but is it worth it?

LOL! So true. That's why my motto is ... Sex at the office, don't do it, just read about it. There's a lot less tidying up to do afterwards.

Interview with author Alison Paige

Author Interviews 10 Comments »

I would like to personally Welcome Alison Paige to Savvy Readers today to celebrate Fairy Tales Gone Naughty week here at Savvy & Book Junkie. Watch out! Something wicked comes this way with a very cool, innovative AND refreshingly sexy twist on some of our favorite childhood Fairy Tales. Coming to an enticing new life in Alison Paige’s latest release of Little Red and The Wolf by Samhain Publishing. This is Alison’s take on the Fairly Tale Little Red Riding Hood……

& Little Red Riding Hood never looked so good!

1.   If you had to describe yourself in 1 word, what would it be?

A: Determined. I’ve mastered the art of guilting myself into never giving up.

2.   Can you tell us a little about Little Red and The Wolf ?

Little Red and the Wolf is about a young woman, Maizie Hood, who struggles to keep her bakery turning a profit, her landlord from evicting her, and her dear Granny in a nursing facility. Wrestling with the decision to sell Gran’s cottage is hard enough. The last thing she needs is her childhood big-bad-wolf nightmares turning into real-life adult fantasies. Sexy businessman    Gray Lupo’s sudden interest just makes matters worse. Is he the answer to her problems, or just a wolf in gentleman’s Armani?

Since his wife was killed twenty-one years ago, Gray’s life has been focused on two things: protecting the pack and avoiding the grown daughter of his wife’s killers. When it becomes clear he can’t do one without compromising the other, Gray finds playing “big bad wolf” to Maizie Hood’s “Little Red” is a role he enjoys far more than he expected.

A real bad wolf’s attack on Maizie changes everything. Gray can’t deny the pull she has on his instincts—and his heart. Suddenly he finds himself taking on a role he never thought he’d want, as her protector and mate. Until the truth about his connection to her nightmarish past comes to light…

Who said being eaten by the big bad wolf was a bad thing?

3.   What was your inspiration in creating this Urban Fairy Tale?

A: I love werewolf stories and I’ve always thought Little Red Riding Hood was really about a misunderstood werewolf. One day I just decided I’d tell the REAL story behind the fairy tale.  J

4.   Why Little Red Riding Hood?

A: Little Red Riding Hood lent itself so easily to popular urban fantasy. With the young girl full of curiosity, and confidence and the wolf who longs for her, unable to resist going after her even when it knows taking her could mean his end. Of course in the children’s tale, the reasons for his “longing” and the definition of “taking her” are a little different than in my version.

5.   What was your favorite scene to write in Little Red and The Wolf ?

A: I love the scenes when she first turns. I had such a clear picture in my head of her chasing her tail. And the way she first experiences the world in her new form was a lot of fun to explore and write.

6.   Do you have any other Fairy Tales you would like to re-vamp and make your own?

A: I’ve had a few in mind, Rapunzel, a twist on Sleeping Beauty, and Goldilocks. But my list of “want to write” is nearly as long as my “To Be Read” pile, so I don’t know when I’ll get to them. J

7.   If you could trade places with your character Maizie Hood would you want to?

A: No, I don’t think so. Being a werewolf isn’t easy and she’s still so young. It was nice to walk in her shoes for a while, but she can keep them. My shoes, my life, fits me nicely.

8.   What was your favorite Fairy Tale growing up?

Pinocchio. I just loved the darkness, the temptations, the dangers and triumphs. I loved the beautiful witch who came to grant his wish, too. I wanted to be her.

9.   What are you currently working on?

A: I’m working on a Young Adult suspense based on an old classic. Not a fairy tale.

10.                    What was your most embarrassing moment?

A: Geez, how to choose? I suppose I could pick the time I introduced myself to the woman I THOUGHT was my editor and realized too late that she was actually my publisher’s senior editor. I was new to the publisher and didn’t know everyone. I’d only had brief emails with my new editor and I was nervous. Her name and my editor’s name were similar enough that I got them confused. I walked up to her and said, “Hi, I write as Alison Paige. I think you’re my editor.” She shook my hand told me who my editor actually was and then introduced herself. She then introduced my publisher to me who was standing right next to her. Sheesh! She was very nice about it, but I felt like an idiot.

11.                    If you could ask the readers one question, what would it be?

A: What makes you cringe whenever you read it?  In other words, what’s your pet peeve in romances?
